Truth NOT Spam

March 27, 2018 By Baz Gardner

Truth NOT Spam

I always tell people that my first rule of social media is that some people are not going to like you and that’s a good thing!

Being Social in business isn’t about content marketing, click funnels or lookalike audiences.

It is almost laughable how we all (myself included) use our rational brains to make vastly complex bastions of self-defense that allow us to do incredibly stupid things.

We live in a connected world and as with everything, marketers are ruining every new platform and opportunity, exploiting every crack in human attention and psychology. My Facebook feed is crammed with adds and my LinkedIn inbox with messages sent a thousand at a time.

Almost everyone I know now has a LinkedIn profile, but they almost all read like carbon copies of each other, with the same bland impersonal generic professionalism that we all collectively agreed to adopt in exchange for a false sense of safety and conformity.

It could be considered comedic from a certain vantage to watch our species create the ability to fundamentally connect and then go about pretending to be anything other than who they really are.

Business owners present their awards to the world and pretend that it is all sunshine and rainbows and that they are the masters and experts in their domain, instead of sharing the harsh yet best truths about being in business.

(Our children and some adults for that matter pull duck faces for photos on Instagram and compete to show ‘a more perfect’ life to each other.)

Connection means human to human… not fictional character to fictional character.

All you have to do in a connected world is let people see who you really are. I am not writing this to convince you of anything or to gain anything from you, I am just sharing my truth.

I think it’s time for the ordinary business people to be a voice of reason and to set a standard in our digital and connected world.

Just be yourself and the right people (for you) will be drawn to you, business will be easy and your whole life will be a lot more connected.

Let’s be vulnerable and share the hard lessons, screw political correctness, let’s have real conversations. If those of us who are in positions that advise others are not willing to show leadership in this new world then who will?

Speak your truth not just more spam! Let me know what you think in the comments below.

I am building a community of Advice & Service Firm Owners who are committed to accelerating every element of their businesses and to building their profiles through authentic leadership, innovation, and mutual support.
