How to blog when you don’t know what to write

September 16, 2014 By Baz Gardner

One of the questions that I am most asked by professionals who are curious about ‘going social’ is, ‘How do I keep coming up with interesting things to write about?’.

But it’s not just those who are starting their Social journey who get stuck here. Some of our most successful students and clients are often at a loss when it comes time to put the fingers to the keyboard.

It’s no wonder that so many professionals start out writing and creating with boundless enthusiasm only to have their blog (within six months) look like an abandoned gold rush town, complete with tumbleweeds and a sense of abandoned hope.

Feedback - Nooooo...

The truth is we all have wisdom to share and the power to be of value to others if we just take the chance to get out of our own way.

We fill our heads worrying about what people might want to hear, trying to nail down some elusive ‘target audience’ or fighting to validate our creativity with a commercial tie-in.

What happens is that we create so much noise in our own headspace that there is no room left for the clarity that always provides something interesting and valuable to share.

The less you worry about an outcome and the more you embrace the value that all of us have inside, the more you will have to write about. But that’s not all, you see, when you just learn to let go, and to let your ideas flow with an unrestrained desire to just be of value through your blog, then some other amazing and very cool things happen.

First of all, blogging ceases to be work and it becomes fulfilling. Your words also begin to actually inspire people, to create change and most importantly, to resonate. Of course, not everyone is going to ‘get it’, not everyone is going to find you or your insight appealing, and that is just perfectly fine!

This email is just an expression of me doing as I suggest. It’s 9:45 pm as I write this and it was at 9:00 pm I sat at my computer to create, to start writing. I have a full workshop to present tomorrow and it is brand new material that I have never presented. I had no time to think about what exactly I might want to share, but I did know that I am committed to being of value to you.

I was unprepared and didn’t know what to write, thoughts of getting to sleep and ‘worrying about‘ worrying about what to write quickly filled my head. Questions and doubts, second-guessing and even more random questions quickly piled on top of each other to rob me of clarity.

So, I just took a deep breath and let go of all these thoughts; after all none of those thoughts are of any value to me, let alone to you. When things were quiet, as they always become, it was obvious that I had the perfect piece of wisdom to share.

How to blog when you don’t know what to write? Simple… just stop making so much noise in your head, yes you, YOU are creating it. Your value is always right there in front of you, you just have to be still enough to see it.
