The best way to get stuff done

August 9, 2013 By Baz Gardner

Through our blog, we have imbued you with a ton of really useful information. However, are you actually innovating and implementing any of it? Some of you may find the content a little overwhelming at times and it may just end up relegated to the ‘too hard basket’. We completely understand, but guess what, you don’t have to do it on your own… in fact we recommend you DON’T.

This is where, what we like to call your ‘Systems Champion’, comes into play. This is the person that will drive the project, coordinate the managing directors, advisers, admin, contractors and virtual assistants, keep the team accountable, keep you accountable, schedule content production, test and measure, and so on. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Whether it is reserving time in your diary to get those client videos recorded or approving next week’s blog post or automated tweets, you need the right person to get the job done.

Now don’t get me wrong. If you are the Business Principal, for example, you are still the driver, you are still the leader. It is still your core message (your WHY) that helps create trust at scale – you can’t outsource that. You still need to have direct input on everything and not fall behind because of all those other daily distractions. Supervise, monitor and set the parameters for the team but have them collect and create content for you that is in line with your business message. Have them test and measure and present you with the facts; results keep everyone engaged with progress. And don’t forget…direct engagement with clients cannot be delegated.

You need to seriously consider the skillset of the potential Champion, but more importantly, which skill is the priority? Most will get the order wrong. Absolutely number one on my list is PASSION – and hopefully a passion for Advice! You really want them to be focused and mentally on-board with the journey your business is on, keep this thing going and keep you and the team motivated. Secondly (and remember NOT first) is ORGANISATIONAL ABILITY – implementing means dedication to timelines, pushing things forward and having the power to sort out all the variables. You may be the driver but can you stick to the path and get the right jobs done at the right time? Third (and remember this one is NOT first either!) is KNOWLEDGE – the first two skills are generally inherent personality traits that to a large degree already come pre-packaged inside the human.

[Knowledge: information and skills acquired through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.]

If your Systems Champion has PASSION and ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS they sure as hell are going to make sure they acquire the KNOWLEDGE to do this job and do it well. Implementation is always your competitive edge.
